Moss Poles: How To
This is a quick post on how to care and use Parkside Plants moss poles.
At Parkside Plants we carry two types of Moss Poles: plastic and sturdy mesh with moss pre-packed.
STURDY moss pole instructions:
- after unpacking, carefully remove plastic wrap from the pole
- remove the paper/poly-fil insert at the bottom end of the moss pole
- most poles are shipped with moss and coir already pre-moistened for your convenience. If the pole dries out during shipping, we recommend to water it throughly before mounting the plant (hose it down or place under a faucet for quicker results)
- chose the pot and plant suitable for the pole
- fill the bottom (empty) part of the pole with preferred substrate
- holding the pole upside down, flip the pot and put it over the pole. Pressing them together flip both to avoid substrate spilling
- add the plant to the pot and fill the remaining space with substrate
- use the included ties or any other preferred method to attach the stem of the plant to the pole. If using ties, avoid over-tightening to prevent damaging the stem
- water the pole 2-4 times a week depending on the plant needs and ambient humidity. We recommend hosing down or showering the plant or using watering globes for better results
- sturdy poles are extendable! Simply place the extension over the current pole and secure the mesh opening with the wire. We recommend attaching a stake to all poles over 5ft tall. Please make a note in your pole order if you need an extension and we will include the zip tie.
Plastic pole instructions:
- lay the pole on a flat surface, pre-bend the edges along the lines (we recommend adding the moss or preferred substrate before assembling your plastic pole)
- fill the pole with sphagnum moss or soilless substrate (while any substrate is useful, avoid using soil or any fine grained substrates to avoid spilling. Typically, sphagnum moss, coco coir and leca work best), leaving about an inch of space at the bottom part of the pole
- test the level of substrate by pushing the sides together: the substrate should fill the entire pole but not preventing it from closing
- carefully assemble the pole by inserting the anchors into slits
- fill the bottom of the pole with substrate and insert into a pot. Add the plant to the pot and fill the remaining space with substrate
- attach the stem of the plant to the pole. If using ties, avoid over-tightening to prevent damaging the stem
- water the pole once the moss dries out, depending on the plant needs and ambient humidity. We recommend hosing down or showering the plant or using watering globes for better results
- plastic poles are extendable! simply affix the new filled pole on top of the first one by closing the bottom anchor. We recommend adding a stake for plastic poles over 3ft tall.
